Skin care is a vast and ever-changing industry, and keeping up with the latest trends may be difficult. Toning the skin, which was previously simply the second phase of a simple three-step skin care regimen, has changed names and taken on new forms, and it is now an important daily routine.

There are a variety of ways to follow up your cleanser, from old-school astringents to modern toners to Korean beauty essences. Which option, though, is best for your skin?

TONER

A toner is used to balance the PH level of your skin and remove any remaining pollutants after cleaning. After cleansing, modern toners are designed to restore the pH levels of the skin. Toners now are much gentler, and they contain a range of additional ingredients that help the skin in a variety of ways. You can select one that is exfoliating, acne-clearing, large pore reduction,  anti-inflammatory, or anti-aging, depending on your needs.

ESSENCE

The essence is a relatively new product category that emerged into the beauty market in line with the international spread of the Korean wave.

An essence is a liquid skincare product that isn't quite as powerful or concentrated as a serum, but doesn't quite serve the function of a toner. It's made to absorb quickly, hydrate quickly, and nourish skin at the cellular level, leaving it softened and ready to absorb all of your serum's benefits. In other words, they can improve the effectiveness of your serum while also allowing you to give your dry skin a burst of moisture and nutrients.

How to apply Toner and Essence?

Toner should be used with cotton pads. And, Essence should be patted into the skin directly with your palm.

Since you're essentially eliminating residue from the skin, toners and astringents are generally applied using a cotton ball or round pad. Because you're adding extra moisture to the skin with essences, it's best to pour the liquid into your palm and massage it into the skin with your fingertips for optimum absorption.

If including a toner and essence in your routine, it  has the potential to enhance your skin or increase your regimen's plateauing performance, why not give them a try and see if they're really worth the extra money, time, and effort?
