Correct Order to Apply Skincare Products

The sequence in which you apply your products matters, whether you desire a quick three-step routine in the morning or have time for a complete 10 step routine at night.

The skin's function is to keep things out, yet many of the skin care products we use contain chemicals that we don't want in there. Even when precisely produced and applied, just a little amount of these essential components can penetrate the skin. You won't get the greatest benefits from your skin care routine if you don't use items in the right order. So, you're wondering which product goes on top of which?

Apply your products from thinnest to thickest consistency, or from liquid to cream, as a simple rule of thumb. “Think thin-to-thick in general, but start with the products that have the compounds that need to enter the skin the most like serums and antioxidants.

I've listed the correct order to apply your skincare as well as the stages you may absolutely skip based on your skin type and concern.

There's no need for an eight-step skin care routine. Most individuals benefit from using fewer products, so if you're just getting started, stick to the basics: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Use a hydrating serum if you have dry skin. If  you have a concern with breakouts? Add a retinoid or an acne toner.

Directions for Layering Skincare Products -
  • Cleanser - Always use cleanser for face and go for double cleansing like an oil based cleanser for makeup removal, don't use makeup wipes. Don't be tired of two steps of  cleansing, just remember how many steps you have followed for your makeup.
    • Toner - A toner is used to balance the pH level of your skin and remove any remaining pollutants after cleaning. After cleansing, modern toners are designed to restore the pH levels of the skin.
    • SerumFace serums are lightweight moisturizers with higher concentrations of active ingredients than standard facial moisturizers. Face serums, which are well-known for their effectiveness, are frequently used to address specific skin care issues, such as wrinkles, hydration, skin brightening, anti-aging, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone.
    • Eye Cream - In the skin care industry, retinol has become the superstar of skin care products these days. While an eye cream containing retinol, is undoubtedly effective, there are other ingredients that can help you with your under eye concerns, such as caffeine and peptide, which can help with puffy eyes and fine lines, respectively.
    • Spot Treatment - The best time for spot treatments is at night, when your body is at rest, but your skin is working the most to restore itself. If you use retinol at night, consider spot-treating in the morning instead to avoid irritating your skin. Make sure to use your spot treatment before your moisturizer, regardless of when you apply.
    • Moisturizer - Moisturizers are an essential part of a good daily skin care routine. It hydrates the skin while also locking in all of the other layers of product you've applied. In  the morning, look for a lightweight lotion or cream. In the evening, a heavier night cream can be used. If you're currently using a retinol-based night cream, so doubling up with a retinol serum won't improve your anti-aging results it'll only create inflammation.
    • Sunscreen Always use a sunscreen with SPF 30 and above. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against the UVA and UVB rays. The use of sunscreen on a daily and regular basis helps to prevent the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, and changes in the appearance of pores over time. Even if your moisturizer does contain SPF, you should still use sunscreen.
